Pyrography as an art form has existed for thousands of years, appearing in cultures from around the world. In the Han dynasty in China, it was known as “fire needle embroidery.” A tiny wooden cup engraved with hummingbirds found in Peru dates to 700 AD. There is evidence that medieval blacksmiths participated in the art form as well.
In this class we'll learn the art of woodburning - from choosing a pattern to finishing and sealing a piece. We'll learn how to prep our wood surface, select and apply our pattern, and burn our design using the woodburning tool. Techniques for shading, lettering, and applying color will be covered. We will start with basic practicing and increase our pattern complexity over the course of the session.
I've won awards in the United States and Canada for my woodburning/pyrography pieces, and sold commission pieces of my art as well. The click-through photo for this class is of one of my award winning woodburnings.
Warning - woodburners are hot and can cause burns if not used correctly. Safety will be taught but each student must be responsible for their own tool and safety.
Supply list - Note - you MUST have these supplies to take this class. There won't be substitutions given if a student doesn't have the supplies they need, they won't be able to participate.
