A story, no matter how complicated or fantastical, starts with good bones. The setting, the characters, the motivations, simply the way the story gets told. In this fourteen-week class, students will hone these talents through a mixture of lecture-style classes, in-class workshops, and weekly writing exercises. Students will traverse through beginnings, both studying good ones and writing their own. We will spend more than one week imagining a character, building them and their world out in its (almost) entirety. There will be lessons on dialogue and scene building. We will also think about the ways tension/suspense operates in the stories we read. And, of course, we will study and create endings. This fourteen-week class will be a boot camp for writers (in the friendliest, most supportive way). While there is a lot of information to cover, students will always come first and if a concept needs more than one week, we will adjust accordingly.
Materials needed: Notebook, pencil/pen. Access to computers. Access to a printer is not necessary but would be a great help.
