We will start with a quick pre-history of the early 1600’s but move quickly to Colonial America, the American Revolution and the Early Republic, American Expansion, the Civil War and Reconstruction, Industrial Revolution, Modern America, WWI, WWII, Post WW Era and current history.
The class will look at these times through the survey of original historical documents and reading and interpreting speeches. We will analyze the times above, the surrounding events, and the writers, the cause of the writing of the documents or making of the speeches.
We will start with the Magna Carta and Columbus’ Apologia and read documents including but not limited to: The Mayflower Compact, George Washington's First Inaugural Address, Patrick Henry’s Liberty or Death speech, some of the Federalist papers, the Declaration of Independence, the Monroe Doctrine, A House Divided, Inaugural Address by Jefferson Davis, Pearl Harbor Address, Marshall Plan, Defense of the Alamo, Liberty for All, Articles of Confederation, NW Ordinance, Emancipation Proclamation and US Constitution & Amendments. Students may be asked to read documents before class. All documents will be posted or linked in the Google classroom.
My name is Chavelle-Marie Skrastins. I graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Arts majoring in American History. After Cornell, I attended the University of San Francisco School of Law. I worked in the insurance industry on Wall Street with Fortune 500 companies for 15 years before becoming a homeschool mom. My children are in 11th and 12th grades and I have been homeschooling them for 4 years. I was a Director for my kids Classical Conversations Co-op from 2017 – 2018. I led 9th graders in algebra, American History, English, debate, physical science and Latin.
